25th Annual Pedal for Peace Bike-a-thon raises $11,605 for Latin America solidarity groups!
24 T-shirts from past Pedal for Peace Bike-a-thons, strung along registration tables, fluttered in the wind in celebration as 50 bikers signed up to ride for either 12 or 24 miles. Groups of people gathered for conversation before heading off on the Chicago Lakefront Bike Path, greeting old friends and making new ones.
Six people rose to the challenge of being "Spokes-persons for Justice" by raising $250 or more in pledges: Sheila Brady, Andy Carter, Gary Cozette, Jim Hoover, Sidney Hollander, Dan Hunter-Smith, and Martha Pierce. We especially want to recognize and congratulate them for their extraordinary efforts!
Together, bikers and volunteers collected donations adding up to $11,605 for projects funding scholarships in Cinquera, El Salvador, and Saq Ja', Guatemala; health promoter training and medical equipment for rural communities in Chocó, Colombia; a Garifuna hospital and rural workers' organization in Honduras; and to support CRLN's work of promoting peace, justice, and human rights in our hemisphere.
