No to the U.S. - Colombia FTA!

National Call In To Congress to say "NO" to the Colombia Free Trade Pact:

Congress is back in session after its August recess.   It could consider the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as soon as the first week of October.  So we need your help to keep the pressure on right now to stop this harmful trade agreement that will add to global warming and displace family farmers, Afro-Colombians & indigenous peoples.  Senator Durbin (D-IL) and Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) particularly need to hear from constituents.

Please join our National Call-in to Congress this week and make your calls! (see below for sample script)

Even if you've called once, twice, or more before, your members of Congress need to keep hearing from you. So please follow the instructions below to make your call as soon as possible:

Call Instructions

Step 1 - Call the capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to your representative or one of your senators. (They all need to hear from you!) If you don't know who represents you, click here to look it up by entering your zip code. Then pick up the phone and dial!

Step 2 -  Ask to speak to the senator or representative. If you can't speak to him/her, ask for the aide that works on trade and labor issues. Keep your message simple.

Just say:

"My name is ____. I am a constituent calling to urge Representative/Senator ____ to take a stand for human and labor rights by opposing the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement."

If you would like to say more, check out the Latin America Working Group (LAWG) resource page to get some more talking points that you can use.

Step 3 - If you have time once you're done with your first call, get on the line with your other members of Congress too. Then tell us how it went through this website.

Congrats!  You've done it.   Thank you for sticking with us. We know it's been a long struggle against this FTA-years of work for some of you. But if we can keep the heat on this fall, we might just win!
