In partnership with the Albany Park Theater Project (APTP), CRLN is organizing a fundraiser around APTP's upcoming production entitled Home/Land! In this show, the award-winning APTP ensemble brings to vivid theatrical life stories of desire, risk, resilience, heroism, love, and hope as immigrant families strive to stay together and make a better life in the land they've come to call home.

Friday, Feb 17th at The Laura Wiley Theater, Eugene Field Park, located at
5100 North Ridgeway in Chicago. Tickets with the CRLN group will be sold
for $36 and include a pre-show reception with light refreshments, a group of
great people with whom to watch and reflect upon the show, as well as a
post-show discussion hosted by the Albany Park Theater Project. About the Play: A brother sings his sister to sleep with the tale of a glorious tree whose roots grow on both sides of a border… A pair of young lovers dance on their wedding night, then wade across the Río Grande hand-in-hand as their honeymoon… A precocious seven year-old in Jordan becomes an unconventional entrepreneur to pay for her family’s immigration… A nine year-old joins the guerrilla in El Salvador after the murder of his parents… A boat hurls two dozen immigrants across the Gulf of Mexico… A father and son rehearse new identities for a new life… So begin the epic quests of Home/Land. With its characteristic humanity, creativity, and optimism, the award-winning APTP ensemble brings to vivid theatrical life these stories of desire, risk, resilience, heroism, love, and hope – as immigrant families strive to stay together and make a better life in the land they’ve come to call home.

Forced Out: A Teach-In About Immigration and Incarceration This teach-in provides a starting place for a conversation among individuals and families impacted by "mass detention." It also gives students, activists and allies a chance to make connections across issues that are often seen as separate and even competing. By educating people about the shared logic of the prison and immigration systems, Forced Out will increase the links among affected groups and help to create a more unified voice for policy change across all communities. Maya Essence 4357 N. Lincoln Chicago, IL In January of 2012, CRLN Board members Sidney Hollander and Martha Pierce, along with Rev. Michael Swartz and Jeanne O'Melia, traveled to Guatemala to learn about the impact of recent elections there. They met with human rights defenders and other involved in the ongoing struggle to bring justice and accountability to Guatemala, and also visited CRLN's long-time partner, a community of former refugees in northwest Guatemala, Chaculá, to celebration their continued commitment to building a community of equality, dignity, and peace. On Wednesday, May 9th the U-Chicago Coalition for Immigrant Rights (UCCIR) will be hosting Jose Antonio Vargas at 6pm (doors open with light food and refreshments at 5:30) at International House (1414 E. 59th Street).
Vargas will speak and there will also be an opportunity to donate to the Illinois DREAM fund as well as time for Q&A. Vargas is Filipino-American and a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist who has worked for such newspapers as the San Franscisco Chronicle, Huffington Post and Washington Post. Last summer he left the shadows, coming out as undocumented in the New York Times in a very powerful op-ed . Since then Vargas has founded www.defineamerican.com where he raises awareness of undocumented issues and advocates for immigration reform across the country. | ||

Topics can range from the increasing cost of a loaf of bread in Chicago to the 1.4 billion people worldwide living in misery; from the ‘war on terror' and global homeland security industries to increased militarization of domestic policing; from global wage depression and the creation of disposable labor reserves to devastating climate change, destruction of environments, and the privatization of common resources. Within each of these threads (and many more), the power of global economics determines the material state of contemporary world affairs. Major events around the globe in 2011, from Tahrir Square to Zuccotti Park, have instilled a great urgency in us all; we need to understand how the complex conditioning by global processes has given the 99% of the world more in common than we dared to imagine before."

"Reconnecting in the Aftermath of El Salvador's Civil War: The Joys and Challenges of Finding Family" Margaret Ward, Emerita Professor, Wellesley College, is the author of Missing Mila, Finding Family: An International Adoption in the Shadow of the Salvadoran Civil War, the story of her son's adoption from El Salvador and their later connection with his birth family through Asociación Pro-Búsqueda. Nelson Ward de Witt, Margaret's son, is now a film-maker. He will present excerpts from Identifying Nelson/Buscando Roberto in which he tells the same story from his perspective. Asociación Pro-Búsqueda was founded by the late Dr. Robert Kirschner and Salvadoran colleagues to reunite Salvadoran families with children adopted abroad during the war years. It was a 1997 call from Dr. Kirschner to the de Witt-Ward family that set in motion this remarkable reunion.
